  What is reining?

  • To rein is not only to guide your horse but also to control its every movement
  • The rider and horse perform one of ten approved NRHA patterns from memory; demonstrating various figures, stops (sliding) and turns (spins) at varying speeds (speed control) as well as lead changes (flying changes)
  • The emphasis is on the technical application of natural aids and the rider's ability to show total control with minimal effort.
  • Reining is the Western equivalent to English Dressage (at speed).
  • Free style reining is a class where participants perform their own choreographed patterns to music wearing costumes (both horse and rider). This is highly
  • entertaining and fun for the participants and audience. Free style reining is one of the fastest growing classes in both the adult and youth divisions.
  • Reining caters for both professional and non-professional riders in different classes.

The National Reining Horse Association of South Africa (NRHASA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of reining in South Africa . The association was formed early in 2003 and is associated to SANEF. Its membership is growing at a rapid rate with an international trainer and judge residing in South Africa . All men, women and children of all ages can do this sport. Almost all horse breeds can do reining. Dressage horses or any English schooled horses adapt readily to the discipline. NRHASA has regular clinics and shows and are looking forward to the Olympic Games in 2008.

Reining is listed with the FEI (Féderation Equestre Internationale - www.fei.org), the ONLY western event to attain this status. It means that Reining will be included in the World Equestrian Games, and also in Nations Cup events. NRHASA is working on putting a team together for these events with the help of SANEF and the FEI.
