The Selectors have a mandate to always choose, in their opinion, the best team for the competition at that time.

Formula followed:

1. The Convenor informs the other Selectors of the standard and conditions for any team that requires selecting in good time.
2. The Selectors always obtain the most current rankings for the standard of competition that they are selecting for.
3. The Selectors observe as many shows as possible prior to selection. Each Selector compiles a list of their choice in order of merit. A list numbering somewhere between 6 and 10 possibles.
4. The Selectors then have a meeting, or usually a conference call and the team is selected following these discussions.

Criteria that selectors take into account when choosing teams:

1. Current Rankings.
2. Horse and Rider combinations if selecting Rider with own horse for the type and standard of competition.
3. Capability of rider on a number of different horses for teams on borrowed horses.
4. Whether or not, in the Selectors opinion, the rider is of the character to represent SANEF with honour and be a team player.
5. The Committee has only considered, at this stage, competitors currently living Overseas for Overseas International Competitions. In that case, their Overseas rankings and results are taken into consideration.

Aim of the Committee:

The overall aim of the current Selection Committee is to build up a “squad” of top riders, who have all had team experience from which to choose teams for World Equestrian Games, Nations Cups and Olympic Games. To this end, the committee is striving to make up teams with a balance of experienced team members and new caps.
